Reflexology

Foot Anatomy
The feet are very complex in that each foot has over 7,000 nerves, 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments and 19 muscles. Add a system of tendons that hold the structure together and you have an extremely intricate network. Considering the entire body has 206 bones, both feet have almost one quarter of the bones in the human body.

How Does It Work?
Reflexology is a natural, non-invasive treatment which relaxes, restores, revitalizes and brings about a state of healing. Each area on the foot contain a representation or ‘map’ of the entire body. When direct thumb or finger pressure is applied to these neurological-reflex points, the corresponding area in the body is stimulated, cleared of congestion and the natural healing process is enhanced.

Reflexology teaches that a vital energy, or life force, circulates between the organs of the body, permeating every living cell and tissue. If this energy becomes blocked, the part of the body relating to the blockage is affected. Energy blocks in the human body can be reflected on the feet. By using specific acupressure techniques, they can be detected through the experience of tenderness or the presence of 'gritty areas'.

The acupressure and massage applications are designed to dissipate energy blocks. Through stimulation of the circulatory and lymphatic systems and by encouraging the release of toxins, reflexology promotes the body to heal itself.  Reflexology is extremely effective in cases of stress, tension, and tiredness and can be used as a preventive measure against ill health.

Is Reflexology a Cure-All?
Reflexology does not claim to be a 'cure-all' but numerous disorders have successfully benefited from this method. These disorders include migraines, sinus problems, hormonal imbalances, breathing disorders, digestive problems, circulatory problems, back problems, tension and stress. Most people who have experienced reflexology would agree it can be most beneficial and is also an extremely relaxing experience.  Reflexology benefits the whole person, not just the symptoms of disease.

What are the Benefits of Reflexology?
The body has the ability to heal itself. Following illness, stress, injury or disease, it is in a state of 'imbalance' and vital energy pathways are blocked, preventing the body from functioning effectively. Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium and encourage healing.

A reflexologist uses thumbs, fingers and hands to apply pressure to the feet.  The application and the effect of reflexology is unique to each person. A reflexologist's sensitive and trained hands can detect tiny deposits and imbalances in the feet and by working on these points, can release blockages and restore the free flow of energy to the whole body. Tensions are eased and circulation and elimination are improved. This gentle technique encourages the body to heal itself at its own pace, often counteracting a lifetime of misuse.

As a result, Reflexology:

  • Boosts the lymphatic system
  • Stimulates circulation and hastens excretion via the kidneys and waste products of metabolism
  • Relieves tension and stress by promoting relaxation
  • Balances the nervous system
  • Reduces inflammation and swelling in joints and so alleviates pain
  • Enhances detoxification
  • Assists in healing and balancing of all body systems

What to Expect During a Session
Reflexology is performed with the client relaxing comfortably on a massage table or reflexology chair and covered with a cozy blanket if desired.  Only the shoes and socks will need to be removed.  The technique involves moderate to firm pressure to specific areas on the bottom, top and sides of feet and ankles.  Music is played softly in the background to encourage relaxation. A proprietary blend of Young Living Essential Oils, specifically designed for profound relaxation, can be used during a session upon request.

A typical session usually lasts one hour (30-minutes per foot).  Reflexology can be performed as a stand-alone treatment or complementary to other healing modalities.  Reflexology can also be enjoyed by all ages, from babies to seniors.
Stress is a major cause of illness...so sit back, put your feet up and help your body help itself!
